Whether you’re hiking a trail or relaxing at the beach, summer is the season to enjoy the outdoors safely. Dr. Thomas Horowitz, Family Medicine Specialist, shares key tips to help you stay prepared and protected.
Summer is a perfect time to enjoy outdoor sports, whether you’re hitting the beach or exploring hiking trails. But no matter the activity, hydration is always paramount.
At the beach, you’ll usually find hydration options nearby. But when you’re out in the hills, preparation is key. Take twice as much water as you think you’ll need:
- ⅓ for the hike up
- ⅓ for the return
- ⅓ as extra, just in case
If you come across running water, don’t assume it’s safe to drink. Consider carrying a water filter or purification straw.
Also, don’t forget the essentials for any serious outdoor adventure:
- A compass
- A knife — scout or Swiss Army types are best
- A first aid kit
- A signal mirror — small, light, and effective
- Some paracord or light rope
- A Mylar emergency blanket
- Snacks like trail mix or nuts (Fun fact: M&Ms, jerky, and pemmican were often found in military ration kits—they last long and keep your energy up.)
Finally, always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. That one simple step could be the difference between a long wait and a timely rescue.
Stay safe, stay prepared — and enjoy your summer adventures!
