In honor of Mental Health Month, Chief Medical Officer, Borah Kim, MD, PhD, MBA, shared tips on how to maintain a healthy mental status in the workplace and high-stress environments.
What is one important thing people should know about mental health?
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Both are deeply connected. Our thoughts and emotions impact our bodies, just as physical health influences how we feel. To truly be well, we must care for both.
In high-stress environments, like hospitals, what are some ways people can better manage their stress?
- Take micro-breaks during shifts — even 2 minutes can reset your brain.
- Practice mindful breathing before or after patient interactions — inhale calm, exhale chaos.
- Do peer check-ins — a quick “You okay?” can go a long way.
- Use quiet spaces — even 5 minutes in silence can feel like a spa day in hospital time.
- Share humor and harmless jokes — laughter is still one of the best (free) stress relievers on the floor.
What are the most common workplace stressors that an employee can experience?
- Excessive workload
- Lack of support or recognition
- Unclear expectations
- Moral injury (feeling ethically compromised)
What can they do to help alleviate some of these stressors?
- Set realistic boundaries
- Communicate openly with supervisors
- Use EAP or internal wellness programs
- Practice short daily mindfulness routines
What are some signs coworkers/friends can lookout for to be able to tell if their coworkers/friends are suffering from mental health issues?
- Withdrawal from conversations or social settings
- Noticeable changes in mood or energy
- Decline in work performance or concentration
- Physical symptoms like insomnia or fatigue
What are three things people can do to keep their mental health healthy?
- Prioritize daily movement (even short walks)
- Maintain consistent sleep and nutrition routines
- Engage in meaningful connection with friends, family, or colleagues
