Owning a pool comes with responsibility. Safety should be a top priority—not just for invited guests, but for anyone who might access the area. Dr. Thomas Horowitz, Family Medicine Specialist, shares essential tips on pool safety as pool season approaches.

  • Rescue Equipment: Always have flotation aids readily available. While life rings are traditional as a tossing tool, lifeguards prefer “torpedoes”. They’re safer for both rescue personnel and the person in distress as they are pushed towards the individual without putting the rescuer at risk of being pulled under.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Post your street address clearly so 911 response is not delayed. The pool should be secured behind a locked fence or have a secure cover when not in use.
  • Trained Supervision: A person with CPR training should be present for any planned gatherings. Ideally, have someone with lifeguard or rescue diver training on-site.
  • First Aid & Safety: Keep a first aid kit accessible. Glass items should be banned near the pool and surrounding walkways. If an attendant is trained, consider having oxygen support on hand.
  • Animal Safety: A strong net can be useful for safely removing stray animals that may have fallen into the pool or spa.
