As the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) upends life across the world, several countries have rolled out social distancing measures and ordered residents to stay at home. COVID-19 has taken over the news, our social feed and our minds—there is no respite from the pandemic. Many of you are feeling the toll of isolation—staying away from family, friends, and colleagues—and anxiety from constantly reading about the virus. We do not have control over the virus, but we can control how we respond to it.

Here are some tips to help you deal with the ‘stay at home’ order during COVID-19:

  1. Firstly, follow the order. The more we follow the ‘safer at home’ order and practice social distancing, the shorter the isolation will be. You are not only protecting yourself and your loved one, but everyone else you come in contact with.
  2. COVID-19 is a global pandemic—you are not alone. Take a break from social media and news to get a breather from COVID-19. It helps to share the feelings and get guidance if it feels overwhelming.
  3. The little things become big during stressful times. Little bad habits that are tolerable in normal life can really get on one’s nerves during these times. Practice not only physical (6-foot distance), but also mental and emotional distancing amidst COVID-19.
  4. Now is a good time to save money and conserve resources. Accept that it may not be a good idea to run out for one essential item for your next meal.
  5. Lastly, humor is the best medicine. Look for games and entertainment that is light hearted and you can enjoy with your family.

We must buy time for our researchers to find better treatments and vaccines. We do that by following the rules, practicing social distancing, and playing it as safe as possible.
