Labor & Delivery Phone: (213) 413-3000 x 4803 Labor & Delivery has 14 labor rooms on the unit, a 3-bed triage room and a 2-bed ante-partum non-stress testing room, three delivery rooms and two operating rooms; all located on the third floor of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. The staff includes highly qualified and experienced registered nurses, surgical technicians and unit secretaries. Two nuns from the Servants of Mary order also volunteer their time on the unit, answering questions, interpreting and giving assistance where they can. The department averages about 400 deliveries per month, with most moms laboring on average six hours, although inductions average about 12-14 hours. However, some take much less time (and some much longer)! Additionally, there is a 6-bed ante-partum section on the seventh floor. This area is designed to care for high-risk pregnancies (e.g., pre-term labor, preeclampsia, etc.). The ante-partum section is a quiet, restful area that allows the moms-to-be to rest and complete their pregnancy under the watchful eye of labor and delivery nurses. Recently, the L&D has been painted giving it a much fresher look. Some new equipment has been received and four much anticipated beds are due at the end of October. In June, the unit implemented computer charting successfully and in July the ante-partum section was established. Additionally, the unit has worked hard on their employee engagement scores by successfully implementing a suggestion box and recognition bulletin board. When asked what the most exciting event she has experienced on the unit is, Sherry Childress, director of the unit, stated: “A patient who had complications very early (at 16 weeks) was able to go to 37 weeks before she delivered. That is exactly what we want to happen—the physicians, the staff and everyone working together to help this mommy get through a difficult pregnancy. The goal of our department is a positive outcome for the mommies and daddies.” Labor & Delivery attained a 100% patient satisfaction score on the most recent Picker information available.
